How It All Began... Blue Book 1958

1958 Blue Book Legend

In The Beginning...

Boy Scout patch collecting has come a long way in the past 50 years. Order of the Arrow Lodge Listings, compiled by E. Forrest Reynolds in the 1950's, was the first attempt to codify patch listings on a national basis. It was colloquially known as "The Blue Book" and it is from this that the current Blue Book takes its name.

The book's legend, shown on the left, is the genesis of our current system of patch classification. Many of the patch classifications we now know and use are already in place. Some types like "S" for solid flaps and "W" for woven patches, now commonly used, are not mentioned since in 1958 those "new-fangled" types of patches had yet to appear.

I plan to add scans of other such historical documents and long out-of-print books on this site as my time and copyright law permit. If you're interested in seeing more works like this illustrated here, please let me know.

Illustrating the 1958 Blue Book

In 1958 the Blue Book contained almost no information to describe the patches listed. Presumably, since there were so few issues then, it was felt no description was necessary. Certainly this is no longer true. Below, is my attempt to reconstruct the issues listed in this book, to the best of my ability.

This is a work in progress, and is far from complete!
